The U18 Men’s National Team recently held it’s the first training camp under head coach Mike Matkovic recently, and two members of the New York Red Bulls Academy were selected to participate. Midfielder Dylan Mencia (Honedale, Pa.) and defender Sacir Hot (Fairlawn, N.J.) were among players at the mega camp, held from Dec. 28 – Jan. 4 at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.
Both players had been previously recognized by the US Soccer Development Academy as members of the U15/16 Mid-Atlantic Division Starting XI squads for their performances during the 2008 season.
Matkovic and an expanded staff trained and evaluated the 72 invitees by dividing them into four groups. The split squads trained together and played intrasquad scrimmages throughout the week.
The Red Bull Academy duo was among 15 players representing youth teams affiliated with nine Major League Soccer clubs and the Red Bulls were one of just three clubs with more than one invitee.
Each player at the camp was born in 1991, making them eligible for both the U-18 MNT and the 2009 and 2011 FIFA Under-20 World Cups. The U-18 program was created to aid in the transition for younger players between the Under-17 Men’s National Team and the Under-20 side.
