TUESDAY TRAINING: PACHECO LIKELY TO TRAIN: UPDATE

RBR has learned the Alfredo Pacheco arrived in New York on Sunday and will likely train with the team beginning today.  He has received his P-1 visa and passed his physical, but still must obtain his ITC before being eligible for selection.  If his ITC comes in before Friday, Juan Carlos Osorio can have the defender in the 18 for  the match at Houston.   However, with the Red Bulls at the MLS roster limit, the club must make a roster move in order to add Pachecho.  Who that player will be has yet to be determined.  RBR can also confirm some of the reader comments that the player will NOT be Terry Boss, as  the goalkeeper is on the disabled list, and the move must made to clear room on the active 24 man roster.

What do you think of Pacheco’s imminent availability?  How do you think the tough decisions facing the front office in terms of roster space will shake out?  Do you waive a player or try and engineer a trade to make room on the roster?  Share your thoughts in the comments section.

UPDATE: Pacheco, wearing #16, was a full participant in training today and met with the media following the session.  In injury news RBR spoke with Mac Kandji, who did not train today.  Mac told us his ankle feels much better than it did yesterday, even going so far as to use the word “great” when describing how it felt, and he feels that he should be a full participant in training on Wednesday.

  1. 505anthony Says:

Can we all chip in to upgrade his ticket to Saturday morning and send him to Houston in time for our match?

  2. Rooney20 Says:

    Trade Goldy to LA.

  3. Pico Says:

I am with Rooney. Or drop Smith.

  4. kpugs Says:

Bobcat’s gotta go asap. He has been nothing short of awful this year.

I really don’t like that we are down to 11 Americans on the roster. I’m not xenophobic–without foreign players MLS would be nothing. But as a fan I don’t want us to become the Arsenal of MLS, fielding squads with zero home-born players.

  5. idriveavw Says:

goldy should be on the chopping block. smith is good, imo, and we should keep him. but goldy has made too many mistakes already this season and at least one of them has led directly to a goal against us. dump him or trade to LA for allocation money or something

  6. kofix5 Says:

bobcat’s got 2 nicknames now and should have a fresh set of walking papers too. get that allocation money.

really excited to see pacheco coming in, maybe he can make pietravallo play better since he’ll possibly have better communication with both fullbacks CJ and AP.

let smith try to beat hall for the left mid position.

  7. Almedin Says:

Trade Goldy.. Pacheco owens the left back spot.. I have seen him many times and he is excellent..

  8. mike from linden Says:

    get rid of pietravallo

  9. OgreDave Says:

Goldie has got to go. But knowing Osorio, he will probably keep him, and get rid of someone who can help the team, but hey that is the RedBull way!

  10. Cindy Says:

that stupid left foot of Goldie’s will keep him in. which means someone i might not want to see go will get the axe…. or i wonder… if he’d drop boyens or mendes… but i dont know that he’d drop defenders.

  11. unknown Says:

goldie has to go, but so does khano hall is better by far and can hold that spot down, pietrovallo is dead weight we don’t need another defesnive midfielder we will have sassano, stammler and celadas there so we will be fine, if we can get rid of all that dead weight we can sign some younger players preferably american or argentien or maybe eastern european

  12. lou Says:

i feel the same as the guy above me, but for this weeks game it would be great to see stammler and celadas at d mid, hall on left, mbutu on the right, cepero in goal, angel and kandji up top, rojas in an attacking position and pacheco, mendes, and johnson in the back

    ——————–Kandji———————-Angel————————-
    ———————————Rojas—————————————-
    Hall———————————————————————-Mbutu
    ——————————Celadas—Stammler———————–
    —–Pacheco————————-Mendes———————-Johnson—

    ———————————–Cepero—————————————-

or celadas behind stammler and in front of mendes

  13. andy Says:

pietravallo has a guaranteed contract, so he will not be cut.

  14. andy Says:

you can’t play a 3-5-2 unless you have 3 center-backs and wingers who can also defend, which mbuta is not known to do. 4-4-2 with pacheco, petke, mendes, johnson, hall, rojas, stammler, mbuta in a diamond with mac and jp up top. unless mac can’t go then you play 2-3 middle with albert and seth then hall rojas, mbuta.

  15. lou Says:

well kandji apparently will be able to go so we don’t need to worry about that and a lineup like this is the best way to utilize our speed and score goals don’t forget our team hasnt allowed that many goals but we have failed to score even one so that has to be a bigger priority

  16. emilio Says:

You cant play a three man back line with two attacking outside backs, thats suicide, especially on the road. Ideally we would use the following lineup.

    Angel-Mac

    Hall-Stammler-Celades-Richards

    Pacheco-Goldthwaite-Mendes-Johnson

    Cepero

  17. lou Says:

how is richards an improvement over mbutu he certainly doesn’t defend any better and mbutu has played well when given the chance, goldthwaite is complete crap so i would really worry about him playing back there i would rather have petke or boyens back there, and i guess the four midfielders can play flat like that without rojas if celadas is able to deliver the service to angel becuase than we really never need rojas. I guess what i;m saying is emilio ur lineup is good just i would replace richards with mbutu which i know osorio won’t do and i would also get goldy out of the lineup.

  18. emilio Says:

“We have a group of guys that are willing to listen to one another, and there’s no egos,” Keller said. “There’s nobody holding their hands up going ‘All right, how come this guy gave me [a bad] pass?’ Because that guy, when he gives a bad pass, he turns around and runs like hell to try to win the ball back. And there’s nothing better for team spirit than seeing somebody make a mistake and work tremendously hard to rectify that. And that is what we have.”

RBR, any chance somebody can have Angel read that quote, this year he has been anything but a leader. If anything he has made as many mistakes as anyone on the team this year, and he is the one player showing up his teammates, that needs to stop.

  19. emilio Says:

I like Mbutu from the little Ive seen, I just dont see Osorio giving him that shot, Richards based on his past will be given the first shot.

  20. lou Says:

yea i no but in a perfect world he would be in front of richards he is definetly a more complete soccer player

  21. Richard Says:

    Angel-Mac

    Hall-Stammler-Celades-Richards

    Pacheco-Goldthwaite-Mendes-Johnson

    Cepero

    ———————————————————————–

    Maybe Petke for Goldy

    Stammler-Celades are 2 d-mids… would that work??
Some combo of Rojas/Ubi with Stammler/Celades/Sassano would be ideal on paper (attacking then defensive) but there are a couple ways that would work i guess…

  22. Andrew Says:

i think we should forget the diamond midfield and just have stammler and celades playing next to each other as two box to box midfielders. and also are wingers have to be more freeform and less predictable.

  23. MetroStone Says:

Richards has been absolute crap in the first three games, his ego needs a shot.

    Time to bring in Mbuta.

  24. Mentz Says:

One thing is for sure. Change is on the way…

  25. Cindy Says:

at least sit Goldthwaite down and put Petke in and see if that works better

  26. lou Says:

how is change on the way it sounds like you’re counting your blessings before u get them, let’s c if these new signings pay off and can play because god knows osorio has brought in some pretty crap players recently.

  27. victor Says:

Pacheco can play as a defender and mild. Attacking and good defending, also he has a powerfull long distance shot. Good player, good choice in the left wing.

  28. Blanco Says:

Pacheco, will definitelly be a good addition to the redbulls. Maybe not as technical but he is the type of Sergio Ramos, he defends and goes forward on the attack and has powerful shot, will be a good choice on free kicks Roberto Carlos style. Hope the bulls will improve with this addition.

  29. MasterShake Says:

Goldthwaite needs to be CUT.. NOW !!!!!!

  30. TMK Says:

    -Kandji——-Angel——-Richards-

    ——-Rojas——Celades———-

    ———-Stammler—————-

    -Pacheco—Petke–Mendes—Johnson-

  31. lou Says:

TMK celadas isn’t an attacking midfield, and we will need alot of help controlling the ball in the middle so there is no way he will be paired with rojas, richards also is comeplete shit and isn’t the right kind of player to play up top.

  32. Alle Says:

One thing is for sure, Goldthwaite must be sacrificed. As for our formation, why not 4-1-3-2? Since we could see Stammler return, it’d only be fitting to give it a go, although I don’t know how Celades would fit in the equation as he isn’t a real attacking player, more in the middle. Either him or Mbuta in there should work? I’m not sure if Mbuta could even play in the middle but with Richards on the right, I wouldn’t put him out just yet. Rojas was awful in Chicago so he gets the boot.

————-Angel —– Kandji (thankfully Thorrington didn’t rip off his leg)

    Smith ———– Mbuta ———— Richards

    —————–Stammler

    Pacheco – Boyens —– Mendes —— Hall

    —————– Cepero

Boyens is fit, right? I figured he’d do better in there than ‘Goldy’.

  33. MetroStone Says:

    but not better than Petke

  34. lou Says:

Christian Castillo is a very talented fairly young winger who is currently playing in el salvador, pacheco said he was trying to get the winger to come to new york but that castillo would rather play in mexico. We could definitely use him in place of khano or richards to send in some actually good crosses. Maybe we can go for this guy in the summer transfer window, RBR do you think u can pass the word to osorio or something if he already isn’t aware, also is a training up date for Wednesday or something i’m pretty anxious to hear how celadas is doing.

  35. lou Says:

here is a video of the guy he is nasty.

  36. kofix5 Says:

    4-2-3-1

    ————-Angel———

    Smith—–Rojas——-Richards

    —–Stammler—-Celades—–

    Pacheco—Boyens—Mendes–Hall

    or better but newer

    ————-Angel———

    Hall—–Rojas——-Richards

    —–Stammler—-Celades—–

    Pacheco—Petke—Mendes–Johnson

These formations are strong on midfield defense and will provide the stability to keep Rojas in the attacking 3rd.
The second option may be too optimistic.
I left out Kandji but he could be the #1 sub and could replace Richards or Angel
MButa can sub in for Rojas.

Some may prefer the 2 striker set up and given Angel’s demeanor and ability to free lately, I’m inclined to agree. But if we can stabilize the mid then maybe Rojas can create some space and with Pacheco and Johnson delivering crosses and Hall and Richards/Mbuta streaking in we could create some great scoring chances

  37. cb Says:

i agree that goldie should go, but i suspect borman will get knocked down to developmental and zimmerman will get the boot. here’s a shot at a team with subs in ( ):

    ——Angel—Kandji

    Hall—Rojas(Ubi)—Richards(Mbuta)

    ——Celades(Stammler)

    Pacheco-Petke-Mendes-Johnson

    ——–Cepero

  38. D.I.P. Says:

I’d like to see this on saturday assuming everyone is healthy…

    —————Kandji – Angel – Mbuta

    ———————-Hall – Rojas

    ————————Celades

    ———Pacheco – Petke – Mendes – Johnson

    ————————-Cepero

If celades can handle the DM well on his own and with the help of Hall retreating when necessary this should allow Rojas to play further up closer to the attacking trio and should make for better transition going forward. I belive Hall can give our Midfield some much needed versatility with his combo of attaking/defensive capabilities…

PS: JCO… DON’T PLAY RICHARDS UNTIL HE LEARNS TO DO SOMETHING OTHER THAN SPRINT!!!! This is soccer not a 100M dash…

  39. Eugene Says:

    DIP,

That’s an interesting thought, but based on the Seattle game, I don’t think Kandji has any ability to play a left wing forward in a 4-3-3. He just doesn’t play wide enough and use the left corner. Kandji is MUCH MUCH better near the middle of the field. To truly play a 4-3-3, the wing forwards need to be able to play very wide effectively and need to be able to run up and down the sidelines all game long to help out on defense as well. I just don’t see it happening with this team. Put Arjen Robben out on the left and Robin van Persie out on the right and we have a different story… but we don’t have that caliber of players in MLS (at the peak of their careers…).

Honestly, all the abuse of Richards is misplaced at best and misguided at worst IMO. Yes Richards has short comings, but he is a pretty good right wing. A large part of the problem thus far has been that we are a very predictable team with very few threats to opponents given that our left wing is basically not dangerous at the moment. As a result, I think teams have easily been able to double team Angel when he’s alone up top and double team Richards on the right flank. I’ve seen Richards doing a lot of the right things but just being out-manned. Perhaps our balance on the field changes once Pacheco gets in there and starts making our left side threatening again.

  40. lou Says:

i’m telling you we have to go for this christian castillo kid because as eugene said we are extremely predictable and he is the kind of player that changes that, we are definetly not going to use a 4 3 3 because richards can’t play as a foward, DIP celadas is not going to be healthy enough to play d mid all by himself he probably won’t be able to play more than a half as it is. You also forgot stammler who we are going to need and playing hall in the middle doesn’t allow us to use his speed,

    ——————–Kandji———————-Angel————————-
    ———————————Rojas—————————————-
    Hall———————————————————————-Mbutu
    ——————————Celadas—Stammler———————–
    —–Pacheco——————Mendes———————-Johnson—

    ———————————–Cepero—————————————-

or celadas behind stammler and in front of mendes in an extreme d mid position.

or disregard rojas becuase he hasn’t played well and go with something like this

    ——————–Kandji———————-Angel————————-
    Hall———————————————————————-Mbutu
    ——————————Celadas—Stammler———————–
    Pacheco————–Petke——–Mendes——————Johnson

    ———————————–Cepero—————————————-

i would rather have this formation because discarding rojas allows us to use a four man back line which we will need because our center backs are not that mobile. Mbutu probably will not be there though and neither will hall it will probably be khano in place of hall even though he is garbage and richards in place of mbutu even though all he can do is run in a strait line

  41. Another Matt Says:

Is it just me, or does it bother you that so many people think they know the answer to the RB’s problems, but then they can’t even spell the players’ names correctly? People, it’s Mbuta… with an “A” at the end. How can you claim to know anything about this team if you don’t even know who the players are?

Sorry for being so negative, but I just needed to vent…

  42. lou Says:

what does the players names have to do with knowing or at least attempting to solves these teams problems. This is a blog not a spelling B so as long as you can tell who we are talking about there shouldn’t be a problem. If Coach O could decide on about 11 or 12 players to use in a starting XI in stead of about 111 or 112 than the fans wouldn’t have to memorize the spellings of so many names.

  43. Another Matt Says:

I’m just saying, if you don’t even know who they are, what validates what you are saying about them as valuable? For example, when the announcers were saying “KEN-dji” instead of “KAN-dji”, it made me want to turn the volume off – how can we trust their analysis as valid if they don’t even know who the players are? Same thing here – you critique the players’ abilities, and yet you don’t even know who they are.

It’d be like me critiquing you at your profession – totally unreasonable, because I don’t know you, and I don’t know if you’re good at your job. You clearly don’t know who these players are, and yet you continue to critique Osorio’s analysis of them. I’d be more inclined to trust Osorio, seeing as how he is able to critique their work every day.

Again, sorry to all who think my rant is unreasonable…

  44. lou Says:

ok i got what your saying i guess except i know what they do because i watch them on tv, i just may not know how to spell their name, their name isn’t underneath them as they run and frankly i couldn’t give a flying f how many o’s are in osorio. You critiquing me at my profession is completely different because you have no idea what my profession is, where as i know what the players do, what position they play in (although sometimes i wonder if osorio does) and i know what they do well and not well because i’ve watched them do their job. If an announcer gets a name wrong that may get me mad because then they are incompetent at their job, but if a fan blogging on line get’s it wrong is it really a big deal, we have so many things to complain about with this club there’s no need to add more things to that ever growing list.

  45. Alle Says:

He has a point about Mbuta instead of Mbutu or Kandji instead of Jendji but I wouldn’t dwell it too much Matt, it’s not like people pay attention to spelling nowadays – and it is a blog so it isn’t really important, as long as you know who you’re talking about. 1 letter off isn’t worth being killed for.

Now, provided we get a good lineup in Houston, what do you guys think the score will be, any predictions? I’m thinking 0-0 or 1-0 to us – which may sound a bit confident but I’m sure Osorio has made sure that these guys will try to avoid any mistakes in the back – notably Cepero, Rojas, definitely Richards to name a few. If you want to take a realistic standpoint, well Houston will beat us if we keep going the way we have been.. None the less, I hope we win because we could really use the confidence at the moment

  46. lou Says:

alle u r in trouble man u wrote jendji hahah jk anyway yeah if we have you full lineup that means stammler and celadas for at least a half, kandji up top, pacheco and johnson on the outside of the d and hall playing in his real position than im confident we win or at least tie, but that is a lot of ifs so realistically i see our team not coming out on top. Also any training updates RBR? it’s been 2 days since a new post, i’m dieing here.

  47. german Says:

i can’t wait to see pacheco playing, he is good he can play for anyteam he is going to be in the highlites, he is not from argentina but he can play as good as anybody else he plays with his heart and soul he is a winner with FAS CLUB from el salvador he’s been champion 5 times he knows what it takes to win a game. garra , corazon y fuerza.
