RED BULLS IN ARGENTINA: DANCE OFF!!

While the Red Bulls were down in Argentina, the guys had some down time that they had to fill.  Some guys chose swimming.  Others ping pong.  Some grew facial hair. Here is the final video in the RBR “Red Bulls In Argentina” series of the guys and the shenanigans that they can get involved in given the opportunity.

In this episode, the team concludes their time in Argentina with a time honored tradition: The Rookie Dance Off!!!  Jack Traynor, Alec Dufty, Jeremy Hall, and Nick Zimmerman all slip on their boogie shoes to impress the team and those in attendance at the gathering at Juan Pietravallo’s house in Argentina.

I’ve got to chime in. I really do like the blog…. it’s good for updates and little snippets. But is this all Red Bull does?

Take a look at TFC TV:
    http://torontofc.neulion.com/tfc/console.jsp?catid=2&id=452

It’s awesome – yet it makes me cringe, once again, at what Red Bull puts out there. Their “big” pre-season marketing is having 10 staffers wearing bulls horns go around NYC (on St. Patricks day?), and basically confusing people??

And our Official Blog puts up fairly amateur videos of the team having a “dance off” or swimming in the pool?

Someone needs to seriously revamp the Red Bulls relationship with the fans, both electronically and in person (you just let us know TODAY, via the blog, that players would be signing autographs at ESPNZone. Nice advance warning, guys).

We keep hearing how Red Bull is an amazing organization. Let’s see it!

Huge kudos to TFC for doing it right. Red Bull – you could learn something.

Hrmm. Is there a reason my comment is still pending approval? Before they’ve always been posted in a minute.

Is it because I listed things Red Bull was doing wrong or badly?

  3. kahlva Says:

Possibly it’s the link? So I’ll try again:

i posted about this exact sort of thing on soccerbyives.net under the tfc tv thing. Ok 8 million people in new york, 10 kids running and walking extremely slowly in the same part of new york, that can’t be very good, honestly last time i checked we were a soccer team unless i’m on the wrong site becuase so far all i’ve seen is wierdos running around, losers dancing and getting drunk, and some losing results. Seriously out of all the comments i have left the past couple of days with constructive criticism and ways for the red bulls to maybe market more effectively zero of them have been responded to by RBR. Actually RBR hasn’t just not responded to me they haven’t responded to anyone yet they continue to put these stupid videos up. Come on you can do way better than this, or at least i hope you can.

  5. MasterShake Says:

lol gusy, I agree with all of you, but dont kill the messenger please..

  6. pam Says:

well, if this video is any indication, i can see why jack traynor was voted off the island. but seriously, though there’s no doubt the red bulls team is made up of a group of fun guys, i’d like to see them bring some of the enthusiasm i’ve seen for ping pong, moustaches, swimming and crappy dancing to the pitch. team bonding is good, but bond on the field and i’ll be a happy camper.

  7. Frank The Frowner Says:

Speak for yourself Kahlva, I’ve enjoyed all the videos from Argentina. All the Petke videos were hilarious. I love seeing the lighter side of things surrounding the team.

  8. kahlva Says:

Hey Frank – you’ll notice that I say I DO enjoy the videos (and I am speaking for myself). Read a little closer.

My point is – that’s it?? That’s all Red Bull (a huge organization that people keep calling “great”) puts out? After seeing the effort teams like TFC (and Seattle, ahem) put into making quality interactions with their fans, it makes me wince.

It’s like the marketing department isn’t caught up with the rest of the big boys. Sigh.

  9. Cindy Says:

    great video!

  10. A_SORRY_A$$_RBNY_FAN Says:

I love the fact that TFC cares about the team enough to put together quality squad/segments/coaching staff/manager/training gear/etc. etc.

I hate the fact that NYRB is a “team” if I can call them that, who does NONE of these things. I just hope someday that I can see a team on the pitch that tries as hard as TFC/KC/SFC/DCU/FIRE/CHIVASUSA/RAPIDS/CREW/FCD/DYNAMO/LAG/
REVS/RSL/EARTHQUAKES do (And yes RBNY i listed EVERY other team!!!!)

Do the Red Bulls even care about what is going on in the league, or any blog that mentions their name, or is it just as much no quality bull as they have put onto the field so far, There needs to be something done to revamp this team, not by RBNY (couldn’t do it even if they wanted to) but by MLS.

Garber please take the whole staff and get some people who care, there are soccer fans in NY!!

At least I can watch the other MLS games and see a football match!

but we will have a new stadium in………… whatever

  11. Eugene Says:

I think what you guys are saying has merit. But I don’t recall all this irritation a couple of weeks ago so I’m inclined to believe that it has bubbled to the surface because we got blown out in our first game. I understand that irritation — having fun in Argentina is only relevant if the team is bringing the goods on the field and performing well. If the team isn’t playing well, suddenly the organization and everything else that’s happening get criticized.

If that is indeed the problem, we just need to be a little more patient this season before we get too angry. It’s just the first game. Houston didn’t win their first six last season and then went on to lead their conference.

If the irritation is specifically with the media, then yes, it’s true that Toronto and Seattle have raised the bar on media interaction with fans. If you think Toronto’s looks good, go check out Seattle’s website and video — it’s much better.

But I would also say that the support has to go both ways — not just from the team to the fans, but also in the other direction. Toronto and Seattle fans sell out their home games and bring loud and active support to the team. Part of our problem is that Giants Stadium actively and deliberately beats down the Red Bulls (this problem will be resolved next season with RBA), but our organization can still improve the atmosphere at home games by tarping off the upper level with the kind of images that Seattle produced, and by taking the tarps off of the sections next to 101 and combining all the supporters groups behind one of the goals (as well as allowing flags and banners w/ 2 poles). These incremental improvements would go a long way to improving the atmosphere and perhaps would move mountains in terms of attendance. But then the fans need to respond and make home games much more fun, as well as increasing support for the franchise.

Here’s another idea of how we, the fans, can help out our franchise. There are about 1,000 that have signed up to be fans on facebook. How about on home-game days we get our fans to wear their jerseys all day. Walk around all day in their jerseys before the game — clearly expressing support of our team in public. 1,000 fans is 100x the visibility of these 10 marketing people. In one of my schools, I remember players would dress up formally on game days — and that act of dressing up clearly distinguished them from all the other students. So even if we can’t get all 1,000, how about those of us who really care wear jerseys all day, no matter where, no matter if we’re going to the game, on home-game day.

How about each one of us takes the initiative to visibly market our team and how about we send the visual message to our franchise that we support you and we care what happens to you.

  12. A_SORRY_A$$_RBNY_FAN Says:

I agree that it goes both ways, and i probably would not even be on this site if I were not a fan, but come on!!!

It goes one way first; WIN GAMES, TRY HARD ON THE PITCH, MAKE THE HIGHLIGHT REELS, DON’T BALL WATCH, ACT LIKE A PROFESSIONAL TEAM NO MATTER WHO/HOW MANY ARE AT THE GAMES (look at the Wizards)! Then market to me! I pay the ticket price; they need to market to me not the other way around, and the biggest thing I want to see as the “customer” is them trying their HARDEST on the pitch, not just advertising “trying hard” to me, but believing it when i see a quality team on the pitch!

a couple of things: keep the same lineup, it don’t work if you have no consistancy in the starting 11. And if someone says “but we made the playoffs last season” shut it! come on who are you kidding!!

  13. Eugene Says:

    SORRY A$$,

I agree with you, the team has to bring the goods or no one will be interested other than the relatively small groups of ultras. But it’s only been one game. Toronto sucked for two entire seasons, mopping the bottom of the Eastern conference consistently. Yet their fans continued to come out and support their team. They have averaged over 20,000 per game for the last two seasons.

I’m not saying we have to go from squat to 20k+ overnight. But for those of us with jerseys, lets take some proud in our local team and walk around in that jersey all day, all around the city. For those that haven’t put $50-70, why don’t you all put that in for one shirt and walk around in it on home game days. There are even jerseys available on discount in some TJ Maxx’s as well as least season’s jersey available on discount.

The team will be much harder to beat at home if they have a 12th man in the stands. Why don’t we demonstrate our love for our team publicly and be that 12th man, not just in Giants Stadium.

  14. A_SORRY_A$$_RBNY_FAN Says:

I know, i know… the market is different in Toronto, the Canadians always back up their teams, and they have a soccer mentality in their city, not much else to do up there (kidding).

I needed to let off steam, but I expect the best from my NY Red Bulls! and I think that in this market, that is what is needed to make fans show up.

Yes, i think it will be better once people can take mass transit to RBA, and yes having the 12th man there is very important, I wear my metrostars jersey all weekend (i know i need a red bulls jersey; I am a long time fan), people ask me who are they, and I want to tell them they are the best soccer team in MLS, but I can’t!!

here in NYC I think that it will be almost impossible to convert fans of other sports, it just won’t happen, but I know fans of soccer, and they all say that if the team was consistently a class team, they would come to see games, the best marketing of all is them winning no matter the fan base.

Toronto has the fans, now NY can have the team that even when no one was there, they played class football and filled their new stadium, that is the best marketing gimmick/story i can think of.

  15. Eugene Says:

I agree with you man, and after 13 years of mediocrity the reputation of the team has been hurt in the market. If they win, people will ask, and not just soccer fans but casual NY sports fans as well. Yes they need to win to promote themselves.

I’m also making the point that we can help them win by being like you. Supporting our team in public and in the stands. Our team can make the game day experience better by tarping off the upper level of seats like Seattle did. Seattle also put scarves all over their city and it was well received there. If that kind of gimmick was done here, our club could be bashed for it, because it’s not much different than the girls running around in face paint. I know, different markets, different strategy.

Gotta give love to get love.

Lou, I hear your angst. But I gotta tell you man, you’re a high school kid with the attitude that everyone around you who is older and more experienced is somehow dumber and less knowledgeable than you. I like your energy, but I have to tell you that education and experience continues after high school so those of us who are older and have seen more, including the people in the FO, are trying to make this happen and obviously it isn’t that easy.

  16. Richard Says:

    ANYWAY…

    LMFAO – channel 50 and 51

but yea, marketing needs an overhaul (by that, i mean we need a marketing team)

  17. Lou Says:

look man yeah im a high school kid but i have no problems giving props were they are do, if a management is competent and caring than i will be the first one to back them up hell i even back these sorry bunches of losers up that don’t seem to care about the team by going to as many games as possible with not that much money to spare. The meer fact that you are the only one defending this blog and not RBR itself should tell you something, why is RBR not on here reassuring the fans, saying they are listening to our ideas and problems, why is it that only Eugene is the sensible one on the other side of the arguement, you don’t see anything wrong with that? You say they are trying to make it happen well ok take a page out of more succesful FO’s books and do what they do, if not listen to our ideas because we are trying to help. Im 16 yet ive been going to the games since day 1 so i care about this club and it seems Some people in the management don’t.

  18. Eugene Says:

To be fair, they’re plowing millions $$ into the organization (team and other operations) each year at a loss. A $200 million stadium (I think that’s the number, right?) is going up in Harrison. That shows commitment in the strongest way — putting their money where their mouth is. I’m assuming these girls don’t work for free, even if we’re debating if this particular exercise was worth the investment.

I may be the fan on here arguing, but the club is the one building a palace for our team when a number of other teams either can’t get a stadium deal done or are cutting back on plans.

In years past, under previous managements, they wouldn’t even do the little exercise we’ve spent so much time criticizing. That’s why from my perspective this is a step forward. I’m not too concerned with RBR coming on here to do the verbal sparring, I’m happy to see that the $$ are flowing because I appreciate that it means that Red Bull is invested and investing in this franchise. It may take some time for all the changes to come to fruition, and certainly there are going to be some setbacks (like 3-0 blowouts on MLS opening day), but I’m pretty confident that influential people are reading what’s being written on here and taking action behind the scenes to get more of our money flowing out of our pockets.

  19. kahlva Says:

Dear guy who works for Red Bull but is pretending he doesn’t… 🙂

    Ermmm… What? No.

I’m sorry – but the people who post on these boards (and MF boards, and Big Soccer boards, and Soccerbyives…etc) ARE the die-hard, my-team-till-I-die fans – so please no lectures about it “having to go both ways.” We already put our heart and soul into the team. We’re simply expecting the team AND front office to do the same.

And no, this reaction wasn’t just because we got thoroughly out-played and out-coached vs. Seattle.

Look back to our reactions to the “marketing” genius that was 10 people dressed as bulls wandering around NYC on St. Patricks day. We all called it mickey mouse. We all are constantly rolling our eyes at the very very little effort that Red Bull has done in terms of marketing to the – wait for it – WORLD’S BIGGEST MEDIA MARKET. Yeesh.

The connection to the fans is lousy. And yes, we all know (although don’t agree with) that Red Bull is waiting until Red Bull Arena opens to do any serious marketing.

But watching teams like TFC and Seattle and Houston and LA (and I’ll stop there although I could keep going) really make huge efforts for their fans – electronically, personally, etc- depresses us almost as much as when our team makes such a lame effort as it did Thursday vs. Seattle.

We actually do love Red Bull for the commitment they’ve shown to the team – we’re psyched on the stadium and the $$ they’re ploughing in. But the connection to the fans has been lousy. It’s a huge, huge mistake they’re making and they need to correct it. TFC and Seattle were built AROUND the fans – that’s why they’re enormous successes. They didn’t build the teams/stadiums/etc… and then hope that the fans showed up.

  20. Eugene Says:

I don’t work for Red Bull dude, not the team nor the drink company. I’m an unemployed former hedge fund analyst.

I was just offering up my $0.02 and defending my views, since I like this little gimmicky marketing campaign. I certainly didn’t intend to lecture you or anyone else for that matter. I just think we can have more than the typical corporation-customer relationship with the team where they offer product and we buy (or don’t buy) — we can transform that relationship a bit into one where ideas flow freely back and forth. To try to make this situation more successful for us and for the team.

If you strictly wanted my business perspective, I would be looking at the success teams in Canada and the Pacific Northwest are having — including Vancouver selling out 5,000 $50 commitments within 48 hours of announcing the team — and be thinking long and hard about having a team in NY that has to pay 2x the cost to get heard and still struggles for attendance. Whether this is the “WORLD’S BIGGEST MEDIA MARKET” or not, Donald Trump, it is a very crowded and expensive market with high maintenance fans. I have to say, from a strictly business perspective, that if I was in charge of the club I would be stop spending good money after bad, just plow the effort under and move the franchise to a smaller market city with less competition that was clamoring for a team.

But Red Bull isn’t looking at doing that and I tip my hat to them for their intestinal fortitude.

  21. Lou Says:

Spending money is one thing, but money can be spent on anything and just because they spend it doesn’t make it right. Like kahlva said we know how this club operates because we are the die hard fans, and i know that i would rather have a club that cares, than a club that sits on their asses and thinks that it can open a brand new stadium that we shud have had 10 years ago and think all the boo boos will just magically go away. You can say ur not worried about the heads of this site not coming on here and talking to us face to face but that still doesn’t make it right and apparently you are the only one that feels that way. I’m tired of getting embarrassed, im tired of losing, im tired of them hiring and firing hiring and firing, start with a solid base and work your way up, in another words you can just take a big heeping turd, throw money on it, and give it a new paint job or build a stadium around it and think everything is alright the fact still remains that it is a turd. So how do u make a turd better… u flush it and maybe plan what you eat better next time. Ha how was that for an analogy. I think i put more effort into that than this team’s FO did into coming up with that lame ass idea.

  22. DS Says:

    Lou,

I’m not sure what exactly you point is except you are pissed off because you’re just some kid who has no say in a club that only brings you pain? What exactly makes your ideas better than anyone else? You make so many different contradicting arguments that it’s no wonder the club doesn’t respond to you.

You know how this club operates because you’re a fan? I’m not sure that logic makes any sense. I think people in the FO and technical staff know how this club works.

RB wasn’t here 10 years ago, so they couldn’t bring a stadium then, that was Metro’s fault. And if you think that after 3 years of being in existence is an appropriate time to build a stadium then RB after 3 years is right on track.

You say you are tired of getting embarrassed and losing, so why don’t you stop booing long enough for a manager to stick around and build a team. We played poorly most of last season, and then we brought it together at the end. It took Sigi 3 years at Columbus to build that championship team, maybe give someone a chance for once in this club’s history.

And good job, you made an analogy, that SAT studying must be paying off. The front office didn’t come up with this video idea, it was just something filmed while the team was in Argentina, and it’s actually pretty amusing, so I’m glad they shared it with us.

  23. Lou Says:

i’m booing and as you put it whining because we keep making the same mistakes, this management has never made enough of an effort to fix the problems it seems as if the just put bandages on it.
Why the hell does it matter that i’m a kid what are u and old man? What barring does that hold on this discussion?
Yeah great the argentina thing was amusing but right now does it really matter, they put a few amusing videos up before this and than we lost so i think play time should be over.
You say i made to many contradicting arguements yeah whatever you say bud, for your information they did respond to my comments and the complaints of others after they were challenged enough.
Give someone a chance yeah ok i guess it was the fans that kept hiring and firing people, that wasn’t our doing clearly because even if we did complain it isn’t like our complaints would change their minds on anything the FO knows exactly how they want to run things and what they are going to do, it is like you said

“You know how this club operates because you’re a fan? I’m not sure that logic makes any sense. I think people in the FO and technical staff know how this club works.”

I guess if everyone had that mentality there really wouldn’t be much of a point of saying anything on this blog because after all we stupid fans can’t possible comprehend what the FO is trying to do only they know how to run things.
Fine i’ll go study for SAT’s or whatever you said why don’t you go check into an old folks home you grumpy old man don’t forget you’re old person’s diaper just in case you shit your pants on the way there.

  24. Lou Says:

no one ever said my ideas were better than anyone elses, this blog that we are writing on has a comment box incase you aren’t aware which means i can comment just as u can so, all i’m doing is exercising my rite to comment is that okay with you. I could very well say the same to you, what exactly makes your ideas any better than mine since yours seem to be the exaact opposite of mine. But i won’t say that because im not a jackass like you and i know you are allowed to write whatever you want down, maybe if your such an adult and apparently better than me, you should be worrying about more important things than what some snot nosed kid thinks.
