Red Bulls vs. Rapids: Matchday

The second match in a stretch that sees the team play three times in eight days greets the Red Bulls tonight at Red Bull Arena.  Also awaiting New York tonight is the defending MLS Champion Colorado Rapids, though its a depleted Rapids side the Gary Smith brings with him tonight, especially in the strike corps.  Out is the always dangerous Omar Cummings and newcomer Caleb Folan, and Conor Casey is just back to full match fitness after being limited with a hamstring strain.  The Red Bulls are not without their own injury woes, as Marquez is questionable with a groin strain, and Henry is returning after missing a match due to knee swelling. Running commentary and lineups after the jump.New York Red Bulls:

———————-De Rosario———————

Subs: Coundoul, Agudelo, Keel, Kassel, Rooney, da Luz, Hertzog

Colorado Rapids:

Subs: Ceus, Nane, Casey, Holody, Palguta, Marshall, Amarikwa

1′ And we’re off…

1′ With Casey on the bench (and with him not participating much in warmups) and a 4-5-1 lineup, look for a LOT of defending from the Rapids tonight.

3′ Akpan almost steals the ball deep in the NY area, but Miller is there to break it up.

4′ First corner of the night goes to NY. Lindpere will take the inswinger.

4′ Tainio puts the rebound on frame, but Pickens punches is out.

5′ Thompson with a foul on Ballouchy earns NY a free kick.

6′ Another corner, this one by De Ro is cleared.

9′ Ream with a hopeful ball for Rodgers, but its too long for the striker.

9′ Akpan with a shot that Sutton stops.

10′ LaBaeux gets a yellow for a foul on Solli

15′ NY stringing together some passes, looking to break down the Rapids tight defense.

17′ Miller comes down hard after a 50/50 challenge in the air at midfield.

22′ Corner for Colorado coming up.

24′ De Ro  sends in a dangerous cross that seemed destined for Rodgers, but Kimura breaks it up at the last moment.

26′ Miller gets called on Akpan for a PK.  Looked outside the area to us.

27′ Sutton makes the initial save on Larentowicz,’s PK but the rebound went right back to Larentowicz who taps it in.

29′ GOAL NY!! Lindpere plays on De Ro, who puts a perfect cross to Henry, who blasts it past Pickens, 1-1!

31′ Henry gets a yellow for a foul on Thompson.

32′ Goal Rapids.  On a quick restart, Larentowicz puts it right past the wall and Sutton.  NY caught offguard.  2-1 Colorado.

34′ GOAL NY!!  Miller plays on Rodgers, who puts it past Pickens with the outside of his foot!  2-2!

35′ Tainio puts one on frame in the area that Pickens has to punch away.

38′ De Ro attempts a full side volley of a Solli cross, but it goes wide.

44′ Mendes gets a yellow on a questionable call.

HALFTIME: A back-and-forth first 45 ends 2-2.

46′ And we’re back.  No changes for either side.

48′ Solli whips in a nice cross, but Pickens intercepts.

55′ Lindpere sends in a cross that is directed out for a corner.

65′ Rapids sub: Casey comes on for Akpan.

66′ Rodgers almost bags another, but Pickens makes a great swat to push it just wide.

71′ Rapids sub: Nane for Mastroeni

72′ Henry heads a De Ro cross wide.

77′ Ream clears a Casey shot off the line.  His second save this season!

78′ Rapids final sub: Amarikwa for LaBaeux

82′ Lindpere earns a free kick in a good area.

87′ NY earns a corner and subs Agudelo for Henry before they take it.

88′ Tainio puts one on frame, but Pickens is there.

90′ 3 minutes of stoppage.

90+’ Amarikwa almost ends it but its just wide off the counter.

FULLTIME: 2-2 draw for NY in an entertaining first half but lackluster second half.
