Red Bulls vs. Sporting KC: Preview

After two matches that saw the Red Bulls score seven and conceded zero, New York hosts an offensively dangerous but struggling Sporting Kansas City side Saturday night at Red Bull Arena (GET TICKETS).  Prior to the match, the club will honor legendary defender Mike Petke, who retired at the end of the 2010 season.  After the ceremony, the Red Bulls will return their focus towards three points vs. an Eastern Conference foe.  We asked Thierry Henry, Juan Agudelo, Bouna Coundoul and Jan Gunnar Solli for their thoughts on the match.  Share your thoughts and predictions in the comments section.

I’m looking for consistency from the Red Bulls — the final frontier — and I hope they have a third strong game in a row. The offense has been getting a lot of great attention the past couple of games (and for good reason), but I hope the defense posts a third straight shut out for a 2-0 victory against the proven offense of SKC. We need to contain their 4-3-3 and not allow the forwards to make good runs in behind the defense.

We need to continue to play smart team defense and to play quickly in the final third, forcing Nielsen to make saves.

I’d go with Henry and Rodgers up top, Tainio, Lindpere (glad he is okay), Richards and DeRosario in midfield, Marquez, Ream, Solli and Miller in defense and Coundoul in goal with Agudelo getting some minutes as well.

This will be DeRosario’s breakout game as Marquez, Tainio and DeRosario control the pace and possession. I expect Richards to have a strong game as well and for Henry and Rodgers to continue their excellent form.

The Red Bulls need to stockpile as many points as possible given the number of New York starters that will be absent due to the Gold Cup held this summer.

    Let’s go Red Bulls!!!
