Red Bulls at DC United: Preview

After a complete win over San Jose that head coach Hans Backe called the team’s best match in his tenure, the Red Bulls travel to our nation’s capital for a showdown with rival DC United in the first leg of the Atlantic Cup (Thursday; ESPN2/Deportes; WADO 1280 AM; 8:00 PM ET).  New York reclaimed the cup last season (2-0 aggregate) after winning in DC and drawing at Red Bull Arena.  While this rivalry dates back to the formation of MLS, only a few current Red Bulls have played in this derby, or at RFK Stadium. DC, revamped with the additions of Charlie Davies, Dax McCarty and Josh Wolff, has begun to turn their fortunes after a nightmare 2010.  We asked Backe, Thierry Henry, and Tim Ream for their thoughts on the match.  Share your thoughts in the comments section.

Let’s go Red Bulls; get three points! Just play the way you did against San Jose last Saturday. That was a stong team effort from the opening whistle to the last second; best MetroStars/Red Bulls game EVER.

Henry just scored with a beautiful header against D.C. United, woo hoo.

great finishing… like henry said the game should not have been 4-0 but DC could not finish and the red bulls did… team still looks a little off…. but jesus do they look scary…

I’m certainly not complaining after this one

i think RBA has not been filled cause the weather has been so freaking horrible durring those games…. even the houston game which i went to it was cold… and the san jose game i am surprised they let people go into RBA without checking if they new how to swim first… once the summer hits expect the place to be packed… especially if they are playing this kind of football….

exactly, we are notorious for bad attendance early. As it warms up and the post-season approaches our attendance vastly increases.

Fantastic result. Great team defending. The unselfish play is helping the team reach this next level. They did not control possession as much this game but there was effective movement in the final third and lethal precision in finishing by Thierry and Juan. Glad the captain had a stellar game. Jan, three assists, and Dane, two assists, combined magnificently and were key tonight. Bouna with two HUGE saves to help keep a comfortable lead. Can’t say enough all season about Rafa and Teemu including tonight; hope they can keep it up. Solid performances by Joel, Tim, Roy and Luke as well. I like how Dwayne tracks back and helps out defensively but waiting for him to integrate more effectively in transition and in the final third.

Not a single soccer fan in the NY metropolitan area has a justifiable excuse for not supporting this team.

ahhh hans and soler you two had a vision for this team… some people called you guys crazy… CRAZY LIKE A FOX.!!! lol…. i am glad that FINALLY someone at the top of the red bulls /metro’s knows what they are doing…
