After a week of build-up and anticipation, the New York Red Bulls will be looking for three points in one of MLS’ marquee match-ups, as they take on the Los Angeles Galaxy tonight at The Home Depot Center in front of a national audience (ESPN2, ESPN Deportes).

The Red Bulls come into the match with 41 points and a victory tonight would push them even closer into playoff qualification. Meanwhile, the Galaxy, under former New York head coach Bruce Arena, is the first team to have clinched a postseason berth with a League-high 50 points off a 15-5-5 record and will be looking to boost their credentials for the Supporters Shield.

While New York forward Thierry Henry is injured for today’s showdown (right MCL sprain), the match is expected to feature four Designated Players – Red Bulls Juan Pablo Angel and Rafa Marquez and the Galaxy’s David Beckham and Landon Donovan. All four are among the starters tonight. Here is the lineup Red Bulls head coach Hans Backe has put out:

Substitutes: Sutton, Borman, Petke, Ubiparipovic, da Luz, Robinson, Ibrahim

Two changes in tonight’s lineup from last Thursday’s 2-2 tie at FC Dallas with Angel replacing the injured Henry and Carey Talley, who was acquired from D.C. United last week before the trade deadline, making his first New York appearance, taking the spot of Chris Albright. Albright did not travel to California due to a groin strain.

Los Angeles, which beat New York 1-0 on Aug. 14 with a goal from MLS leading scorer Edson Buddle in the teams’ first encounter, comes into tonight’s game after earning a come-from-behind 2-1 win over D.C. United at home last weekend. Standout American defender Omar Gonzalez is suspended today due to yellow card accumulation. Here is the Galaxy’s starting lineup:

Substitutes: Saunders, Lewis, DeLaGarza, Birchall, Cazumba, Bowen, Magee

Kickoff is set for 11:00 PM ET with JP Dellacamera and John Harkes calling the match live on ESPN2. We’ll also be doing a play-by-play commentary via our Twitter account (@newyorkredbulls). Enjoy the match and we’ll be back here with post-match reaction later!

    Angel has been very poor.

  2. Reese Says:

Bouna and the Bulls can taste these 3 points. Good message being sent tonight.

  3. Reese Says:

Gosh I’ve been promoting Richards all year and he has done the job… Quieting the nay Sayers but Lindpere so solid all year so solid the Bulls really benefit from this quiet workhorse. He has been so good all year and again tonight a humble star for this team. Well done Joel

  4. emilio Says:

Dane has been crucial of late, its obvious that Angels best days are behind him, his lack of pace is really evident, but good finish on the pk. Big win!!

  5. Reese Says:

BOUNA TIME! Great win and clean sheet for the Red Bulls another very good team effort.

  6. david Says:

    good win for us

  7. CBW soldier Says:

Good Win. Go Redbulls. We can actually possess the ball. What a difference from last year. Quality starting to be seen all over the field. Petke quietly had a good game subbing in for Tally. Would have loved to seen Henry in at the end of this game. LA was flat however, but we made them look flat.

    • david Says:

yup and hope tally heels cuz he had a bad first game with red bulls leaveing with injury but hey mendes did so good then then last time he played Leftback

  8. bryan Says:

petke did a great great job came in cold and performed outstanding marking some of the leagues best strikers… my game ball goes to him just an outstanding job by a veteran player who when called did his job… angel looks like he lossing his mojo not shooting when he can taking that extra move… dont know maybe his contract issues are getting the better of him

    • emilio Says:

No its his age, and his first touch has been off all season, he is just purely a finished in the area, he doesnt add to the teams offense. Its obvious when we are at full strength he wont start.

      • david Says:

ture angel had some balls come to him and he just let them go and he would have never got a goal if not for the PK

    Posted this on big soccer:

    Player ratings

Bouna 8 It was Bouna time last night. He was confident, made two huge saves and was on his toes thwarting any LA breakaways
Talley 7 Did fine until he left injured
Mendes 7.5 One of his best games as a Metro/Bull. Shut down Buddle and Landon
Ream 7.5 If he doesn’t win rookie of the year I will burn MLS headquarters down!
Miller 7.5 Had an excellent game. Was quick and kept feeding Lindpere moving forward..any time you shut down the highest scoring team in the league the D as a whole deserves props.
Dane 7 Not as good as he has been of late he still created both of the Bulls goals by scoring the first on a rebound and drawing a PK on the next…
Tchani 6.5 OK job was invisible for parts of the game but did well on D
Marquez 7 Not a great game for Marquez as his passing was way off tonight but did calm the back line as he frequently moved back into central D
Lindpere 8 This guy is a workhorse…. was unlucky on the shot that hit the post but Dane made sure it went in
Angel 7 Scored on a PK and had two headers that came close for goals. So we finally heard it from Angel’s lips that the Bulls may not pay him the salary he wants… I hope he doesn’t leave but if he does I hope it doesn’t effect his play going into the post season.
Ballouchy 7.5 This guy fit right in and makes us better. Period!

Petke 7 Did a great job filling in for Talley… He still can play!

Salou 3 I still wish Woly was playing instead of this Frankenweenie!

The team came back yesterday evening, I would expect Renato to undergo medical examination today with his usual doctors
