Great win for the Red Bulls, who came back from the MLS break and kept pace atop the Eastern Conference tonight. Juan Pablo Angel tallied his 11th multi-goal game, breaking Giovanni Savarese’s club record of 10, while Salou Ibrahim was a threat and earned himself the eventual game-winning goal. On the other end, goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul earned his second-straight shutout and became the first ‘keeper in MLS history to record two assists in one game. He was helped by a backline that played well throughout the 90 minutes.

We’ll have more post-game reaction tomorrow, but here’s what head coach Hans Backe said after the match. What do you guys think? Looking forward to Open Cup on Tuesday? Who was your Man of the Match?

Hans Backe

On the first game after a two-week break
“I’m very happy with our performance. I would say that our second half was our best half of the year. We created decent chances over all 90 minutes but of course, KC had some good chances too. We were very close to killing off the game rather early in the second half when we had two 100% scoring chances. Also, a key is that we looked strong in the second half even with the heat. We became better and better all the time. So that was the best sign for me in a way.”

On playing in the heat
“Yeah, it was difficult, of course.  But I thought we played rather smart. We just tried to stay patient and wait for breaks and things like that. We didn’t chase the ball too much and just tried to play solid and compact.”

On Juan Pablo Angel’s goals
“Yeah, the second one was an excellent goal. Both strikers scored our goals, which is good for the future.”

On Ibrahim’s performance
“He’s a handful with his size, of course. He didn’t get the easiest passes to cope with from the back forward. He’s a handful and by himself; he occupied he two center backs.”

What a great match (especially that 2nd half) to watch after that devastating US national team loss today. Red Bull really showed Kansas City how it’s done. Nice job! Let’s keep it up!

  8. Team Ream Says:

Team Ream was at the game. 100 people drove from St. Louis to watch Tim and the Red Bulls bring a win home. Keep it up Red Bulls!!

  9. Tim F. Says:

Great job Red Bulls! Great team effort, solid defending and Salou and Angel did a great job of capitalizing on the Wizards’ defensive mistakes. Hats off to Coundoul, Albright, Mendes, Ream, Borman and Stammler on the shutout. Lindpere, Ubiparapovic and Tchani were very solid in the midfield and I hope the three of them start there again against the Rapids. Glad to see Ubiparapovic back after the hit he took; I thought he would be out longer.

Watching MLS after two weeks of World Cup soccer was a little hard on the eyes but I like the effort the Red Bulls put in. It was a great way to return back to MLS action after Ghana ousted the US for the second straight tournament.

Please beat the Islanders and have proven goal scorers on the bench just in case they are needed. I hope Nielsen is available soon.
