RBR ON THE ROAD – DAY 3 LA MANGA SPAIN

Red Bulls defender Andrew Boyens at pre-season training in La Manga, Spain

LA MANGA, SPAIN (Saturday, January 23) – Today was the second full-day of training for the Red Bulls in La Manga, Spain, after arriving the Thursday evening. The team trained twice today with a morning and afternoon session. It was a chilly and windy day on the Mediterranean coast with the morning temperature in the low to mid-50’s and it didn’t make it out of the 50’s in the afternoon session as the wind make it feel much colder.

The morning session focused on defensive drills and finished off with a half field 8v8 game. The afternoon featured tactical drills and defensive organizational work.

“I like the methodology and the way we’re going about laying the foundation for defense and defensive organization,” said Red Bulls goalkeeping coach Des McAleenan. “(We were) a team that allowed 47 goals last year; that’s not acceptable by any standards. Obviously our starting points were not correct. Hans (Backe) has done a good job in slowly implementing his ideas and given us the framework in which we’re going to go forward.”

Returning defender Andrew Boyens, who has been working in the middle of the backline for the past four training sessions, has praise for Backe’s defensive system.

“Coach has a very structured system, which I like,” said Boyens. “He has been teaching us how he wants us to defend and cover.”

And Boyens is glad to be back in training. “It’s good to be back,” said Boyens as he settles into the two-a-day routine of the pre-season. “It was nice to have a break, but I am looking forward to the year. There is a lot of excitement around the team. We want to start off the season well.”

The team will have one more training session tomorrow (Sunday) in advance of its first pre-season match, scheduled for Monday against CSKA Moscow.
