RED BULLS VS TORONTO FC: RUNNING COMMENTARY

The Red Bulls take on Toronto FC tonight at a VERY rainy Giants Stadium in the regular season finale for both teams.  It is also the last soccer match that will ever be played at Giants Stadium, so New York will try and close the stadium that was home to the franchise for 14 seasons, while Toronto is still fighting for a spot on the playoffs.  All that, plus Albert Celades will be playing his last game as a professional, as he announced that he will retire from professional soccer following the match.  Lineups and running commentary after the jump.

1′ And we’re off…

1′ Its still raining pretty hard, but a good crowd has come out for the final GS match.

2′ GOAL NY!!  Celades springs Kandji down the middle after getting the ball from Angel.  1-0 NY!

5′ A TFC free kick from 35 yards is blocked by Stammler.

6′ Angel takes a go from 20 yards, but it sails over the top

9′ Petke is down and injured.  Looks like he took a know before the last TFC free kick and tried to play through it, but couldn’t.  Walter Garcia is coming on to make his MLS and Red Bulls debut.

10′ Guevara takes a shot from range that goes wide.

11′ Coundoul comes off his line to break up a scoring chance.

14′ Guevara with a blast from range that Coundoul parries away.

15′ Petke left with a right quad strain.

16′ Coundoul dives to his left to save a shot from Serioux

19′ Coundoul comes out to challenge Barrett and they collide.  Coundoul is able to clear the ball but both are down.

24′ Most of the play is in the midfield as the Red Bulls are switching the ball well.

32′ TFC sub: Gerba for Brennan

33′ GOAL NY!!  Kandji finds Angel at the top of the area and the striker calmly puts it past Edwards for a 2-0 lead.

34′ Gerba puts one over the top.

39′ On a free kick from just outside the area, Guevara curls it around the wall but puts it just wide.

45′ 1 minute of stoppage

HALFTIME:  Red Bulls lead, 2-0.

HALFTIME:  A wonderful first 45 minutes for New York, except for the Petke injury.  The strike duo of Kandji and Angel have a goal and an assist each, while Celades, in his last professional match, also has an assist.

46′ And we’re back…

48′ TFC is pressuring high during the early going, trying to pull one back.

56′ Corner upcoming for NY.

58′ Stammler is down after a collision at midfield

60′ Yellow to White for the foul on Stammler.

64′ TFC sub #2: Vitti for Gomez

67′ Coundoul comes up big to block a header from close range.  We think it was Guevara

68′  The brace is Angel’s 9th multi goal game for his MLS career.

70′ GOAL NY!  Kandji beats Edwards to the ball on a bad header back  and puts it in the back of the net for a 4-0 lead.

76′ Vitti puts one on frame that Coundoul pushes wide, and GErba puts the rebound into side netting.

77′ TFC sub #3: Sanyang for White.

82′ Richards is down after a collision with de Guzman.  He is walking off under his own power.

86′ De Rosario is ruled offsides on what would have been a tally for TFC.

90′ NY sub: Sinisa for Angel.  Angel gets a big roar from the announced crowd of 21,305.

90′ 3 minutes of stoppage.

90+’ NY sub: Mbuta for Celades.

90+’ PK on Serioux for a foul on Kandji in the area.

90+’ Mbuta steps up and buries the PK for a 5-0 lead.

  6. Karbaz Says:

NO way Celades needs to retire, we need to convince him to stay for 1 more year.

  7. Karbaz Says:

My god the rain really is coming down, i remember playing a game like that once when I was younger. Of Course it was the summer then so it felt great, must be freezing over there.

  8. Karbaz Says:

    Coundoul shouldn’t have came out.

  9. Choclo Says:

    Finally Walter garcia is playing!!

  10. Karbaz Says:

Good first half for RBNY considering the elements. Now we gotta keep it up and not get complacent.

  11. Karl Says:

  14. Karbaz Says:

5-0 RBNY!!!! I’ll say it again, what a way to go out.

That’s how good we could be, hopefully we can carey this over to next season in our new awesome stadium.

  15. X man Says:

COngratulations on this last game guys.. you sure showed team work on this last gam at giants stadium.. Still kanda sad Petke didnt get to play.

  16. Cindy Says:

i’m such a sap, i was tearing up when Celades came off [he played really well today, i wish he would have stayed another year] and Angel too [the epitome of a class act, that man]; so glad that we won so convincingly! now hopefully Richie Williams will be signed on as permanent head coach and we take this win as momentum into our new beautiful stadium and fresh new season!

    • Karbaz Says:

I had a little lump in my throat as well, i hate to see guys like him go. I was practically a baby when Tab Ramos left.

  17. Karbaz Says:

Angel has one more season left on his contract, he will stay, and we need to convince Celades to stay. Get rid of Rojas, increase Celades’ salary and let’s keep him for a full season.

  18. Alle Says:

Just got back, what a game that was! I was where most of the kids were – ALL the way upfront. I think the stewards were being nice today since this was the last game of the season, I didn’t even see a steward in the front until the 80th minute! By then, everyone was covering the front seats and I was glad to be a part of it. What a way to end the Giants Stadium era, a big win and a great crowd too despite the rain. I was soaked but so what, I was so excited that I didn’t even notice! Towards the end of the match it seemed like everyone jumped down a few seats since it was getting loud! Unbelievable.

What a game by Kandji, he was great hands down. Angel did well too, it’s good to see he’ll be back next season. All of the guys were great, and even Garcia had a good debut, I look forward to seeing more of him next year. And lastly, I want to thank Bouna for the gloves, I’m never forgetting that moment, ever. Great game by him as well, makes it even all the more special, thanks Bouna!

And one more thing: I think Richie deserves a pat on the back. Eversince he took over as interim, he has set this squad on the right track. We don’t need a big name European manager for the job, we need him. He’s the man, hands down. Next season is our season.

  19. NJMetrostars Says:

Alle you where right there also!! i was in that same side but towards the goals i saw Bouna gave someone his gloves congrats!! I caught 2 balls no pun intended from Boyen (he handed it to me!!) and from Mbuta (caught it)

  20. Alle Says:

Yeah that was me, wow we nearly had an RBR encounter!

You’re lucky as well! Celades came to us twice, only to give balls to two kids near me, damn lol He’s going off on a good note!

  21. Metro boy till da day I die Says:

Players to keep in my humble opinion.. Angel, Coundol, Celades, Mbuts, Kandji (MAYBE), n some of low paid young players that are still improving like Zimmerman, Sassano, Ubi, Boreman… I just wook up so I might have missed 1,2 players but we do need to rebuild heavy.. Even considering the 5-0… N btw F the rain! It got me sick!

  22. Choclo Says:

Mike Petke what a great guy!!!, I was in the rally tunnel and Mike was the only one to say “Thank you guys for your support in this rainy day”, at that time was pouring in the stadium.
