BOYENS GETS WCQ CALLUP FROM NEW ZEALAND

The club announced that defender Andrew Boyens has been called up to the New Zealand National Team for the first leg of its 2010 World Cup Qualifiying two-leg playoff against Bahrain. The first leg will take place in Bahrain’s National Stadium in Manama on Oct. 10. Boyens will join the New Zealand squad after New York’s clash against the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday, Oct. 3 at Buck Shaw Stadium (TV: FSC, FSE; Radio: WADO 1280 AM).  The defender will not miss any matches for New York, as the club does not play an MLS match that weekend.

The All Whites host the second leg at Westpac Stadium in Wellington on Nov. 14. The winner of the series will qualify for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. Boyens has earned 12 caps for his national team and competed at the FIFA Confederations Cup in South Africa for New Zealand last summer. New Zealand qualified for this final playoff stage after winning the Oceania qualifying zone last year. The 26-year-old has started in 11 games this season for New York.

I’m literally leaving for NZ on November 5th to live abroad for a year from the States. I’ll definitely be at that game in Wellington to see if they get in or not. The following summer would be that much more awesome if they do…

Hopefully he won’t look like a complete child playing soccer for the first time like he did in the Confed Cup..
