RED BULLS AT CHICAGO: POST MATCH

A crushing loss for New York, who came in to the match with high hopes and optimism.  But even though it seems that all is lost, DC has to beat Columbus away to earn the final playoff spot.  Here is some post match reaction:

Juan Carlos Osorio:

Juan Pablo Angel:

Kevin Goldthwaite:

What are your thoughts on the match?  Are there any positives to take out of this (maybe Kandji’s first MLS and Red Bull goal?)  Can New York take any solace that it can still make the playoffs and start fresh in the postseason?  Share your thoughts in the comments section.

I’ve had season tickets since this league was created. I can’t remember ever seeing a worse performance from this club. Ever. It’s like they’re trying to drive us away.

  2. Tim F. Says:

While I was hoping for a win, I really thought under the circumstances the team would find some way to get a tie. The fact that the team was so far away from a tie is disturbing. How could this happen?

I was particularly surprised at how poor the central midfield played.

    I hope Stammler is okay.

Congrats to Kandji and I say we keep him.

  3. Mentz Says:

Plain and simple, we do not deserve to be in the playoffs. While we still have a chance, this was the worst effort of the year when we needed our best. Absolutely pitiful.

  4. daz Says:

if the crew do us a favour and stop D.C winning on sunday, we would face houston in the play-offs. with our road form so bad, if we do make the play-offs, the first leg at meadowlands is key. we will need to win it by at least 2 goals, say 2-0 or 3-1, as we will not beat dynamo in houston, for sure, look what happened at chicago!!

  5. tilt215 Says:

That lineup last night was a joke, plain and simple. You know its bad when the “neutral” announcers cant stop talking about how bad the line up was. I usually watch the game with a bunch of friends and when our starting 11 were announced we all looked at each other like it was a really bad joke. Week after week, all season long, we cannot maintain a lineup. Everytime we find one that works (take last weeks for example), it is immediatly changed.
It was obvious from the lineup that the goal of osorio was to play for a tie, but our defense is awful. The only defense we seem to have is when we mount such a powerful offense tht the other team never gets any opportunities. We should have come out of the gates attacking last night with everything we had; Angel, VDB, Richards, Kandji, Mbuta. We score two goals, then sit back on that. Playing for a tie is just bad form and that is the only thing osorio could have been thinking with that lineup.

And BTW, this isnt a whole hindsight is 20/20 type of deal… When we saw that starting 11 last night, we all knew we would lose. I gave up on that match before it even started.

We never should have changed the lineup from last week.

I just wanted to add, now that I have taken the time to listen to the audio clips above: Goldie’s comments tick me off; in what world were you guys doing ok with posession? Everyone’s excuse is that JCO was focusing on posession, then why dont we put in players that have shown they could actually posess the ball. Magee doesnt cut it. He had a few good games mid season and dried up fast. Stammler has been awful all year. Rojas and Petro will go down as just 2 more epic failures in this teams history of failures. The defense, well they speak for themselves.

Also what was the deal with bringing in Luke Sassano at halftime. Why wait so long to throw Richards in? We are down by 2 goals int he most important game of the season, you dont come out swinging the first half, and you still dont come out swinging in the second half… Its almost like Osorio has no clue how to put an offensive minded team on the field.

This is ridiculous, Im getting upset about this all over again. Im sure glad we gave Chicago our right nut for Osorio (hey wasnt osorio partly renya’s recommendation? we all know how great he was for our team)… EPIC FAIL

  7. Mentz Says:

For me it was way more simple. Richards, Mbuta and Kandji were all off the field when they should have been playing. It took away our speed and changed what was working. Stammler wide on the right side?

I understand we’re away at Chicago in a hostile environment, but we just beat the best team in the league with one lineup and then we go and take out the keys to success with another. Mac has had 2 assists and 1 goal in the 3 1/2 games he’s played this season. Give the kid a chance from the get go! Very upsetting.

  8. cb Says:

The match was painful and humiliating. I kept a Greek restaurant open late to watch with the owner, and all he could say is “this is not good football.” Osorio’s changes in the line-up show poor judgement. Changing last week’s winning back line with a rookie keeper in the cage is foolhardy, but to put Cichero in when he has repeatedly choked under pressure is inexcusable. Placing Stammler on the wing demonstrates a fearful cluelessness. Benching Kandji and Richards highlights a disturbing arrogance. The team and fans deserve better than this.

  9. tilt215 Says:

Since I said this somewhere else, I might as well say it here too. Since our season is over (and dont anyone go spouting about the playoffs. Even if we make it, do you really want to embarass our team for another 2 games? Lets just let this season die and try to pick up the pieces next year), how about we start considering a DP to replace Reyna. I think our offense could become pretty solid: Angel, DVB, Richards, Mbuta, Kandji… lets go with them for awhile and see what we can do. We are scoring goals so I dont think the offense is a problem, we need a better defense. So lets do an MLS first and use a DP Slot to bring in a world class defender. Im not talking some 40 year old looking to retire… lets spend some cash and go after someone in their mid 20’s who is still in their prime. Let’s stay away from south america (not talking about the nationality of the player, just the league they are playing in)… we haven’t gotten anything good there. Lets look for a good European based defender, someone who can really hold our backline together. And im not talking splurging and paying the guy like a mil a year…. LETS GO BIG. We are redbull, where’s all this fatty redbull cash? Sign a Sergio Ramos or something (i know, i know he wouldnt play here, it is an example of the caliber i am thinking of). You sing a big enough defender, he will put butts in the seats and sell merch (Beckahm isnt the only name in soccer).

Look, can I put in an application to coach this team? I would keep most of the lineup we have, dump the three useless players we picked up midseason (and boyens), rebuild our defense, then play the same lineup… maybe for like 3 games in a row (imagine, seeing the same lineup in more than one game…. how great would that be). Oh, yeah, when I screw up, I would take responsibility for it unlike Osorio who blames the players. HEY JCO, YOU PICKED THE LINEUP. YOU HAVE SEEN THOSE PLAYERS PLAY LIKE CRAP THE SAME AS WE HAVE. While it is their fault that they suck, it is even more your fault that you play them.

  10. Mentz Says:

I’ve been preaching this for awhile! We need a central defender that can run the defense and make sure things like the header back to Cepero last night that conceded a corner (and eventually a goal) don’t happen. While I’d love to get a player of Sergio Ramos caliber that may be out of the question the way the league currently is. Why not an older defender though? If they are a central defender I’d rather have experience and wit than youthfulness and speed. Why not someone like Lucio from Bayern Munich? Yea, I said it.

  11. karbaz Says:

We will never, I repeat, NEVER get a defender from Europe in there PRIME. tilt215 are you insane? What makes you think a player playing for a champions league type of team would want to come to the MLS. The only players we can get are late 20’s early 30 players or 20 somethings from central and south america. Stay away from south america you say, it’s obvious you don’t watch much Argentine or Brazilian soccer, if we want to get a young great defender that won’t cost us so much the only places we can go is South America. Trust me when I tell you, if we had a good enough scout, we could get a great 20 something defender playing in either Argentina or Brazil that would help us out tremendously.

  12. karbaz Says:

And another thing speaking of age and defenders, defenders tend to play really late into there careers so Im not totally convinced that a young defender is key, we just need a guy wh has decent speed and can actually mark players. There’s plenty of older defenders around the world than wouldn’t mind playing in the MLS if we pay them a few extra bucks. A prime player is out of the question.

  13. Dave Martinez Says:

this was truly a disappointment. the tinkering with the lineup was what killed it for me with Arena. Osorio is doing the same exact thing.

but before we chop off his head, this team needs to put something into perspective – 9756197517128402174104 coaches in 12 years folks. Osorio has to return next season, and has to be given a chance, with what he has learned, to improve this team significantly this offseason. With that comes the management hooking on a short leash to their coach and an ultimatum – “Win and you stay. Lose and your out.” We need Osorio back one more year, for the sake of continuity! Lets see what he does.

  14. karbaz Says:

David Martinez is right on the money, we NEED to keep Osorio for 1 more full season, we need to see if he can pick this team up. I know Osorio is gonna do the right thing and throw every (at least most) useless player we have, which is basically our entire defense.

  15. Tilt215 Says:

Why couldn’t we get a decent european defender? We are one of the top drink distributors in the world, we have the money. Isn’t that the point of the DP slot, to get players we wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford.

And don’t say a player wouldn’t want to come here, for the right price we could get anyone. Ok so we can’t compete with EPL or Serie A but as someone pointed out on a board, we could easily get 2 good defenders out of serie b and that is certainly an upgrade. Mls defense sucks. The whole world knows it. Let’s start showing the world differently.

Part of me wonders if the league likes crappy defenses so that we have higher scoring games.

  16. JoeBrick Says:

The Red Bulls lineup is just a complete mess. The defense isn’t even close to professional level. As far as getting players from Serie B or other European second divisons, it would be difficult. Most second division players are far too loyal to their countries. It’s still worth a shot. Osorio’s predominant recruiting from Latin America is only hurting the team. The Red Bulls need to be smart for the next draft, there is a decent talent pool coming out of college soccer this season. Look to young players, whether it be in this country, Canada, (Argentina and Portugal, which would be tough, but they have so many tremendous young talent that they’re overflowing) or lesser European leagues. DEVELOP a team. Find a lineup that works and don’t throw players in and out every other match, that’s what scrimmages are for. We need a solid 11 that can play as a unit, and I honestly don’t think more than a handful of those types of players are on the team now.

  17. Anthony. S Says:

Last night game was a f*cking joke, it pissed me off how bad we played. I don’t know why JCO didn’t start Kanji, who was coming off a solid game against the Crew. But the defense was just plain terrible. Chris Rolfe had a hat trick, at halftime! Our defense was getting out hustled out played out everything. Blanco torn everyone apart, multiple defenders committed to Blanco leaving guys open freeing up the open field. The first goal, I felt was badly played by Cepero, he hesitated a little for the ball, then got beat on the side, letting Chicago kick a ball in front of our net. The 2nd Rolfe goal was just a snipe and a nice shot, ill give him that. But the 3rd Rolfe goal is just plain ridiculous, basically on a breakaway to Cepero. Not really Cepero’s fault there but seriously cmon you can’t get beat and leave your mark. That’s just an easy goal right there. I really really thought that the Red Bulls would respond in Chicago, and build on the momentum that we had coming into the game. But seriously, we were HORRIBLE on the road this year. We only won 1 GAME away from Giants Stadium this year. If we really want to compete in the league and possibly have a chance to win a championship we got to improve our game on the road. As a fan, I’m very dissappointed with yesterdays result and felt we could of done much better.

  18. Anthony. S Says:

Also I agree, with tilt215, we need to bring in a GOOD quality defender that isn’t washed up. To somehow help this team. As for the offense, it’s very good, but you can’t win without a solid defense.

  19. Gerson Rizo Says:

    Hi guys.
I live in the San francisco bay area, but i do follow the red bulls as much as i can. (been from Colombia) I’m a big JPA fan. Two quick comments thought.
Last night game just shows what the team needs. DEFENSE big time!!
I beleive MAKALELE could solve that problem no doubt about it. Before the season started , he made the comment of coming to the mls ; so we know it’s posible.
Second , we need from Argentina ( La bruja Veron) . Great middfilder with ball control to feed our offense; he also said that the mls could be a new experience for him , so there you go!!! (let’s be positive about the future, and please don’t stop supporting our players) thanks

  20. Lou Says:

Every year we end up as disappointed as the last, and next year i hate to say it we will be doing it all over again. We need to keep JCO no matter how bad his judjement can be, because when looking at the bigger picture we have some players that can be built around next year. We need a new scout, we need to fire agoos (what exactly has he done), we need to keep juan pablo, kandji, mbutu, richards, van den bergh, and everyone else can go if they wish. The new dp should be used on either someone like veron, henry, or a stud on defense. We need a REAL goalie, not some shmoe that played backup his whole career. Frankly i don’t really know why i have remained a Metro fan for as long as i have, but i know that i can take mutch more of this.

  21. MR G. J. DAVIES Says:
