Mac Kandji fends off Toronto defender in reserve match

MONTCLAIR, NJ (October 5, 2008) – Nana Attakora nodded a Marco Valez cross just inside the 18-yard box over the outstretched arms of Red Bulls goalkeeper Caleb Patterson-Sewell in the 34^th minute to lift Toronto FC’s reserves to a 1-0 win over the Red Bulls reserves at Sprague Field on the campus of Montclair State University. On the play, Toronto pushed the ball down the field and out to the right side for Valez, who sent a curling cross into a crowed box. Attakora leap into the air and was able to get his head on the ball before Patterson-Sewell was able to bat it away for the goal.

The Red Bulls had a number of chances in the match but weren’t able to put it past Toronto FC goalkeeper David Morisalve. In the 21^st minute, Macoumba Kandji went down the left side with only one defender to beat and slid a pass across sending Sainey Tourey in alone, but Morisalve cut the angle down on the right side and made the stop on the low shot to the post.

In the second half, the Red Bulls had the chance to level the score when midfielder David Roth sent a ball in from the left side in the 68^th minute and Kandji was able to redirect it with his head, but Morisalve was able to pull the ball in. Attakora nearly gave Toronto a two-goal advantage on a corner kick in the 77^th minute, but his header from six yards out sailed over the outstretched hands of goalkeeper Terry Boss, who replaced Patterson-Sewell at the start of the second half, and over the cross bar. The Red Bulls made a final push in the waning minutes and had a direct kick from 30 yards out, but Sinisa Ubiparipovic’s curling shot sailed over the crowd in the area and into Morisalve’s hands.
