TORONTO FC DOWNS RED BULLS 3-1 FOR FIRST-EVER MEADOWLANDS WIN…LOSS MOVES REAL SALT LAKE INTO TIE FOR WILD CARD SPOT

By Red Bulls Reader

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ (October 4, 2008) – Toronto FC’s Chad Barrett scored two goals, including the go-ahead goal in the 65th minute, to lead them to a 3-1 win over the Red Bulls at Giants Stadium. Barrett’s first goal of the night…the first Toronto FC had ever scored in two seasons at Giants Stadium, gave Toronto a 1-0 lead at the half. Dane Richards’ third goal of the year, off a nifty header from Juan Pablo Angel tied the game at one four minutes into second half, but Barrett nailed a crossing pass from former Red Bull Marvell Wynne past Jon Conway in the 65th minute to give Toronto the lead for good. Abdus Ibrahim then put the game away, beating Conway off a pass from reserve Johann Smith in the 86th minute.

The loss was the third straight for New York, drops them to 10-10-8 for the year, and combined with Real Salt Lake’s tie with New England tonight ties the two teams for a wild card playoff spot with 35 points each. The two teams meet in Salt Lake on Thursday night with major playoff implications on the line.

Toronto snapped a seven game winless streak to move to 8-12-7 and posted their first-ever win in the Meadowlands.

The Red Bulls finish their home schedule two weeks from tonight on October 18 against Columbus. Game time is 7:30 p.m. ET (TV: MSG, Radio: Spanish Radio: WADO 1280). For tickets, please call 1-877-RBSOCCER.

Not sure how much more of this I can take. At some point every team needs to reward their fans. This team is literally killing me, it’s like I die every year with them.

  2. Eugene Says:

What are you talking about 10-10-8? Nonsense, we haven’t won 10 games this season. Which is damn pathetic.

  3. Anthony. S Says:

the defense played terrible again….they got beat by every single ball near the net and left tons of guys open. This team cannot expect to make the playoffs after the last 2 games letting up 8 goals in 2 games. We definitely need to pick it up and WIN the match at RSL in their new stadium on thursday night ruin their grand stadium opening.

  4. Chic Charnley Says:

Ugly loss, to an ugly toronto side. Big defensive mistakes, gave tfc the win.
